When one or more actors causes injury to a great number of people by a common action or product the claims are considered mass tort claims. The similarity of the negligent act or civil wrong (tort) that was committed against a multitude of people allows their claims to be heard together. This bundling of claims promotes judicial economy in that it allows the courts to more effectively manage such claims which are often filed all across the country by injured victims. Examples of mass tort actions include commercial airplane or train crash cases, hazardous chemical exposure or chemical plant explosion accidents, pharmaceutical litigation, and defective medical device litigation.
