Allograft Tissue
Recall: human tissue transplant class action
Every
year there are approximately one million new surgical procedures
undertaken known as Allografts – surgical transfers
of bone, skin, tendons, and other tissues in which tissues
from cadavers are transplanted into patients.
Recently, a New Jersey tissue company,
Biomedical Tissue Services and its agents were criminally
indicted for illegally harvesting human tissue from corpses.
Biomedical then placed and sold the tissue into the marketplace
(to hospitals, etc.) throughout the United States without
appropriate tissue monitoring which would prevent the introduction,
transmission and spread of communicable diseases.
As a result, patients/victims throughout
the country have received recall notices from the FDA and/or
their medical providers informing them that they may have
received in their surgery illegally harvested body parts
as tissue transplants. Unfortunately for these victims,
the FDA is concerned that the untested body parts and tissues
implanted in them will cause them to be potentially at risk
of developing HIV, Hepatitis B,
Hepatitis C, Syphilis,
and other infectious diseases.
Victims of unsafe and tainted tissue transplants
may have undergone tretment as far back as 2002 and hospitals
nationwide have reported receipt of the illegally harvested
and potentially dangerous tissue. Recalls have been issued
by the following processing firms:
• Tutogen Medical, Inc., Alachua,
Florida;
• Regeneration Technologies, Inc. (RTI), also of Alchua,
Florida
• LifeCell Corp., Branchburg, New Jersey;
• Lost Mountain Tissue Bank, Kennesaw, Georgia; and
• Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas, Austin,
Texas.
